Civilian Evacuation Efforts in Donbas
On February 24th, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As the war progressed, military efforts focused on strategic locations in east and south Ukraine. Large numbers of civilians were literally stuck in the frontline cities and villages where they lived, with no way to get out for those who wanted to. Different groups of volunteers, Ukrainian and foreigners, started evacuating people out of their homes and away to safety, while risking their own lives in the process. These photos document the efforts made by a local organization, named Base UA, to evacuate civilians from the front lines, as well as provide humanitarian aid and medical care to those who choose to stay.
